Apprentices/Black sashes

Alicia Cooperman
I started training in Kung Fu when I was 5 years old.  My brother was already training and I would come and watch him.  I was very interested when I started to see all of the basics and especially the forms. At that moment I knew I wanted to take Kung Fu.  After I started, Kung Fu gave me self-confidence and respect for myself and others… it shows who I am and that I believe in myself.  As a black sash I take great pride in assisting the students in learning while I continue to learn, as well. I believe everyone should take Kung Fu because it teaches you responsibility and how to protect yourself. You can do it if you believe in yourself!

I began martial arts during the 1970’s and achieved a green belt in Tae Kwon Do.  In 2003, I came to Lehigh Valley Martial Arts looking for a program for myself and my daughters. After we participated in a few classes with Shigung Miller we knew we found our “home” to practice martial arts. I worked hard and attained my black sash at just over the age of fifty. I believe the essential component of success in a martial arts’ school is the egoless teaching style of the instructors here, led by Shigung Paul Miller. The style of Kung Fu taught here has so much more to offer to children, women, and “anyone not pumping iron regularly.”

I started Kung Fu in 2003 and earned my black sash in a few years of practice.  Kung Fu has not only improved my ability to defend myself, but it also has helped me in other areas of life. It has improved and developed my concentration in school and allowed me to achieve a 4.0 GPA.  I believe that teaching is an opportunity to help myself and others understand the complex concepts of Kung Fu and share the journey of life together.

I started Kung Fu training at Lehigh Valley Martial Arts in 2003 at the age of eight, joining with my mother and sister. I have learned not only how to defend myself, but how to be respectful, strong, and disciplined. I am very proud to wear my black sash and all of the accomplishments it brings.  I consider the Kung Fu students at LVMA my second family. Just like family, we all help each other get through the hard times, and celebrate the good ones.
